ETUC Executive Committee (including the confederations and Federations) - position Climate change negotiations in Cancun

European Federation of Public Service Unions -
The ETUC Executive Committee (including the confederations and Federations) adopted its position regarding the Climate change negotiations in Cancun (December 2010) at its meeting 14 October. ETUC does ask the Commission and Member States to consider the position on the 30% reduction target and possibly move forward. The position of the EU has been that the EU can not move to 30% emission reduction targets if other countries do not make commitments on reductions. France, Germany and the UK have already argued for the 30% reduction target as a unilateral move.

Member States will not decide yet on going for a new target of 30% emission reductions according to the press and wait for the 2050 Road map for a low carbon economy.

New research of the European Environmental Agency demonstrates that most countries are easily reaching their targets for emission reductions. But the main reason for this will be the financial and economic crisis. http://www.euractiv.com/en/climate-environment/eu-set-overshoot-its-kyoto-emission-targets-news-498779?utm_source=EurActiv+Newsletter&utm_campaign=2444bd974d-my_google_analytics_key&utm_medium=email
NB There will be small amendments to take account of gender, research.
