Pakistan - protest against the proposed break­up of the unified national power system

Thousands of WAPDA and Electricity Workers staged "Dharna" for hours before WAPDA House at the Mall, Lahore on 17 May, 2011 under the aegis of Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Central Labour Union (CBA) in order to protest against the proposed break­up of the unified national power system and its privatization on behest of World Bank and IMF, cheaper and sufficient electricity for overcoming serious load shedding, development of new Hydel and Coal Fired Thermal Power Stations in the Public Sector and diverting Gas and CNG for generating electricity. The rally also demanded that the Government and WAPDA Authority arrang a bilateral meeting with the Union for settling the outstanding demands of the workers, which include up-gradation pay scales, safer work , minimum wages in the industrial workers commensurate with price hike, merging allowances and demanding Government intervene to withdrawn the orders making surplus of 4500 workers of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC).
