Protesters warned that the privatization has caused severe losses to Jakarta water company by failing to give Jakarta citizens a reliable, easy and affordable piped-water service.
These demonstrators included the Jakarta water labour union, NGOs concerned by Jakarta water issues and the community. This was the first time the labour union joined other groups in their effort to push the policy makers to re-municipalize the water service. The protestors expressed their views with activities and banners calling for an end to water privatization by stopping the concession contract before the planned 2022.
Representatives met with the officers of the Jakarta government to submit the petition on bringing an end to Jakarta’s water privatization and to deliver the protesters’ demands. The protest was organized by JRMK, Kruha, SP Jabodetabek, SP PDAM, Walhi, LBH Jakarta, FPPI and SBMI.
