India -- Defending Public Water

The National Platform Against Water Privatisation (NPAWP) was formed on 30th June 2013 with Water Activists, Trade unions, women's groups,  NGOs, RWAs, Academics, as a people's initiative to build solidarity among different water movements and campaigns in India with the aim is to ensure availability of water as a common resource and promote 'right to water' as a 'fundamental human right'.  The immediate objective is to stop the  corporate theft of water and to protect rights over water as a public good.  PSI is also part of this platform , with PSI South Asia Sub Region Secretary Kannan Raman an Advisor in the National Committee.

Recently the Government of India drafted a National Water Framework Law and soughts comments.  Suspiciuous of the attempts to reform the water sector through PPP model in different cities under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM),  the NPAWP analysed and brought out a critique which was sent to the Ministry of Water Resources Government of India.

More advice and a copy of the critique can be obtained from PSI South Asia Sub Region Secretary Kannan Raman kannan.raman@world-psi.org
