Pakistan Electricity - 200 members of the line staff become victim tragic accidents and far more become permanently disabled during the performance of their dutie

  2 Members of Line Staff at Tunsa  Sub Division died as a result accident on duty while  two Lineman met fatal accident in Muridke Division and Kahuta Sun Division and Six Lineman were electrocuted in LESCO within short span of time and more than 200  members of the line staff become victim tragic accidents and far more become permanently disabled during the performance of their duties every year. It is result of  over burdening of  the existing line staff with rising heavy work since no recruitment  had been made for last many years despite increase of the number of consumers and construction of new lines and Grid Stations as well as absence of Standard Safety Gadget to the  Staff and lack of adequate training facilities comparing with the size of work force and ignoring the observance of Safety Regulations at work place which needed  to be remedied. These views were expressed in a large meeting of Elecy. Workers held to-day  10th  July, 2014 at Bakhtiar Labour Hall, Lahore to commemorate “SAFETY DAY” for prevention of Accident of the Field Staff of Elecy. and promoting of “PREVENTION SAFER CULTURE” at  work place by Veteran Trade Union Leader Mr. Khurshid Ahmed General Secretary of “ALL PAKISTAN WAPDA HYDRO ELECTRIC WORKERS UNION” C.B.A. This Safety Day was observed in all major cities of the country.
            At this occasion Main  Sagir Ahmed Director H&R (Admn) Lahore Electric Supply Company Muhammad Akbar Khan General Manager (C&M) speaking on the occasion, urged to the workers that they should refuse to work in case they were not provided with the Safety Gadget and Safe Working Conditions. He also appealed to them that they should not work in any case without observing Safety Regulations. Since many accidents occurred due to over Confidence of the workers themselves. He declared that the management with the co-operation of the union have been making every effort to check the menace of accident. However, the dependents of the deceased worker  has been ensured that the recruitment of their Child  and Daughter or widow immediately  and grant of Double Amount of Group Line Insurance, Family Pension and monthly grant of welfare  Fund including Rs. One million special Ex-Gratia grant  to the members of the bereaved family  as a result of settlement reached between the union and management. At this occasion, Mr. Guy Ryder Director General I.L.O. sent special message conveying is deep appreciation of  the initiative of the union on the subject.
            At the end, Special monitory help was given by the Union on the eve of Eidul Fiter  to the widows of the deceased workers and special Prayer was offered for granting peace to the Soul to the martyred workers and granting patience to  their families and praying to Almighty to make success the  campaign  against the accident  at work place and health and Safety of the Workers. By a resolution the house urged to the Prime Minister to lift ban on the recruitment of the staff and get provided material for efficient maintenance of Elecy. System  and raise the Ex-Gratia Payment to the dependents of the deceased Worker  Rs. 2.5 Million.
