Another worker dies at giant mine in West Papua

http://www.aawl.org.au/content/another-worker-dies-giant-mine-west-papua

One worker was killed and another one injured in a bulldozing accident at the
Freeport-McMoRan Inc giant Grasberg open pit copper mine in West Papua.
Notwithstanding the huge and prolonged strike that workers carried out in 2011
(see herehereand here) such deaths are not isolated incidents. Last month, another worker
was run over and killed by a mining truck at the company's power plant area in
Kuala Kencana – a town located near Grasberg mine. In 2013, there was a major
accident where 28 workers were killed when a tunnel collapsed.

Japan moves on TPP - after weekend by elections

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20161024_04/

"Members of Japan's ruling parties hope to expedite Diet deliberations on bills to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement. Their intention was given a boost after successes in maintaining two Lower House seats in Sunday's by-elections.
Members of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito say the election results reflect voters' approval of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic policies and efforts to put the TPP accord into effect.
Some of them say the results of the elections will have a positive impact on Diet deliberations because they were the latest opportunity for people to express their will. But members of the main opposition Democratic Party say that they felt people's frustration and concern over the actions of the Abe government, including its handling of the TPP. They plan to continue to call for the thorough deliberation of the TPP. The ruling coalition hopes to get the TPP bills passed in the Lower House by the end of this month. It wants to make sure that the pact will be approved by the Diet during the current session."

New Zealand effectively banning the importation of asbestos

http://www.aawl.org.au/content/new-zealand-latest-country-ban-asbestos

At the start of this month, new legislation came into effect in New Zealand effectively banning the importation of asbestos into the country. This is a major victory for the trade union movement in New Zealand who have campaigned hard to ban this hazardous substance. Unfortunately, globally, around 2 million tons of asbestos are produced annually, causing more than 100,000 deaths per year. As the experience of Australia shows, even once asbestos is banned, the toxic legacy of its use will continue to kill people for decades into the future.

Why Local Government Matters is a major piece of social research on community attitudes to local government by the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG), undertaken with substantial expertise from staff of the Centre for Local Government at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS:CLG). The research aims to better understand how and why the activities of local governments, and their roles in society are valued by communities.
The research investigates:
  • What does place mean to people?
  • The role of government
  • How do people want their services delivered?
  • How do people want to be involved in government?
  • What do people think about local government?
  • How do people's personal characteristics and values impact on their responses?

The report is important for Australian local government and other tiers of government, organisations and agencies that work closely with councils. The results are also invaluable for broader debates about reform of the sector, the role of local government in the federation, and immediate local-level issues such as service delivery, community participation in council decision-making, financial sustainability, and the wellbeing of local government areas.

Australia - Superannuation Funds (Pension Funds) buy into Australian privatised Electricity Network Business - Unions seek commitments on staffing levels and service levels to the community.

Unions demand new Ausgrid owners commit to maintain existing employment and service standards
http://gmpsiaprec.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/australia-superannuation-funds-pension.html

Power unions have demanded that the new owners of a controlling stake in Australia’s largest electricity distribution network, Ausgrid, commit to a legally binding agreement that ensures existing employment numbers and service standards are retained at the privatised business.

Their demand follow today’s announcement by NSW Premier Mike Baird and Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian that AustralianSuper and IFM Investors would take 50.4 per cent ownership in the company, delivering a one-off windfall of $6 billion to NSW after debt is repaid.

The Electrical Trades Union and United Services Union, which represent the majority of Ausgrid workers, will also continue their work with Christian Democratic Party leader Fred Nile to deliver water-tight job protections through the NSW Parliament.

“We are continuing to work with Fred Nile and others in the NSW Parliament to ensure ironclad laws are in place to protect the jobs of Ausgrid workers and service standards for consumers under private ownership,” ETU secretary Steve Butler said.
“This process is particularly important given Ausgrid management have previously flagged their intention to test the legal standing of existing protections through the Fair Work Commission.
“We are also demanding that the new owners, AustralianSuper and IFM Investors, publicly commit to retain all existing workers, to abide by the five-year job guarantees negotiated by the parliament prior to this sale, and to maintain the high standard of service that Ausgrid customers currently receive.”

USU general secretary Graeme Kelly said the unions would be writing to AustralianSuper and IFM Investors seeking an urgent meeting to discuss staff protections and the future operations at the company.
“Electricity distribution is a natural monopoly,” Mr Kelly said. “That means that if service standards drop, if maintenance is reduced or emergency response times blowout, consumers have no ability to choose an alternative supplier for their power.
“That is why unions have fought against this sale from day one, and why we will continue to fight to ensure the best possible outcome for workers and consumers going forward.
“Today’s announcement will not see us back away from our commitment to protect the jobs of our members and the services that Ausgrid provides to the people of NSW.”

Unions in Philippines Commit to Defend Power Generation Cooperatives, Drive Public Renewables

http://unionsforenergydemocracy.org/unions-in-philippines-commit-to-defend-power-generation-cooperatives-drive-public-renewables/

" The Center for Power Issues and Initiatives (CPII) was very grateful to have, as its main speaker to the Conference on Financing Renewable Energy and Energy Democracy, Prof. Sean Sweeney of the Murphy Institute, City University of New York, and Trade Unions for Energy Democracy (TUED).

The conference, composed mainly of unions from the power sector, NGOs, and members of the academe, energetically discussed the concept of energy democracy and whether the Philippine government’s policies, specifically on financing renewable energy, would lead to the advancement of this alternative framework. Unions present were from the electric cooperatives and power generation and are affiliated to SENTRO. Unions from NAGKAISA also sent representatives. Finally, the unions resolved to include in their collective bargaining provisions on the shift to RE and just transition for those needing it."
