Electricity Prices in Australia - has privatisation played a role, as the Unions and Community said it would- yes !

As Australia suffers from dramatically increased electricity prices, now well believed to be brought about by privatisation, the "for profit motive" pushing up prices, unplanned power station closures creating additional demand in the system, consumers are doing it very hard.

We are now seeing a position where the ACCC, Australia's competition regulator, a conservative and largely pro competition, deregulation and not adverse to supporting privatisation, holding an inquiry across the country into electricity prices, and has now arrived at the point where its reporting Government policies, including privatisation have failed the Consumer and caused great hardship to low income earners. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-27/accc-accuses-states-of-price-gouging-over-electricity-supply/8748766

The on air television version of the above link news article showed privatisation, of generation and distribution assets had caused this pain for consumers. The report also reported on the extreme hardships being caused to old aged person and others on low income or aged pensions. In some cases afraid to turn there electricity light on, let alone issues associated with heating .

We have also seen very low wages growth in Australia in repent times, which along with price increase in electricity are squeezing families both ways… in today’s media we have seen a report by super market giant ‘Coles’ that consumers are buying less quality food to scrimp and save for their power bills the news report can be found at http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-28/coles-boss-on-energy-bill-fallout/8751852

The report includes the following quotes – "While this trend is occurring across most of our stores, it is particularly pronounced in stores located in the local government areas which have seen the highest cost-of-living increases. "They're having to choose what they're going to feed their family which is disastrous."“ Mr Durkan said there was no doubt high energy prices and the outlook for higher bills was forcing customers to make hard decisions.”

In the State of South Australia that has both high costs as well as supply issues (as we have seen lately) the state government is now looking at a collective contract of electricity supply for those on low incomes …. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-27/further-power-bill-relief-planned/8747842

Meanwhile in the State of Queensland, the State Governments Labor Political party, has released a video on their face book page showing the difference in electricity price increases for the states that have privatised electricity, this state has not, the differences are reported for the increases in this coming year alone

Cities have a central role to play in the transition to sustainable energy:

This is the word from a new report by United Nations Environment Programme " who say -

" Cities have a central role to play in the transition to sustainable energy: as managers of interdependent services and utilities, they are uniquely placed to enable the integrated solutions necessary to rapidly advance both energy efficiency and renewable energy. One such integrated solution is the development of modern district energy systems."

The report cover 45 cities around the world that are doing just that , coming off the grid, rebuilding municipal electricity and city heating .

The full report can be located at
http://districtenergyinitiative.org/report/DistrictEnergyReportBook.pdf

The report covers key areas including -
RENEWABLE ENERGY
DISTRICT HEATING
RETROFITTING AND MODERNIZING
USING ENERGY SOURCES
LOWER PRICES
Plus it identifies LOCAL GOVERNMENT and the role it can and should take .

The report provides key arguments for Unions, Communities and Local Government to take back energy provision to the Local Government and Municipal level ... the report is must read for PSI colleagues involved in this debate .

India - 39 sewer cleaners die in India in 100 days

http://www.aawl.org.au/content/39-sewer-cleaners-die-india-100-days

AWAL www.aawl.org.au has advised that 39 sewer cleaners have died in India in 100 days

" Activists in India have raised outrage [2] over the number of deaths in New Delhi’s sewer system.  The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013 prohibits manual scavenging [3], yet in the last 100 days, 39 workers have died while cleaning sewers, and this is not a rare occurrence. Activists also say that despite providing documents on 56 men who had died in the sewers, the authorities have not identified them, preventing their families from getting any compensation. For workers to win health and safety demands at work, they must be organised and take collective action."

Committee on Workers Capital - CWC - Latest Bulletin

Articles en français/ Noticias en castillano
NEWS FROM THE CWC SECRETARIAT

CWC Conference
The CWC Conference will be held on Sunday September 24- Monday September 25 in Berlin, Germany ahead of the PRI In Person meeting. The annual conference is the premier forum for international collaboration and dialogue between trade unions and pension fund trustees to effect change in the global economy through the responsible investment of workers’ capital.
This year's event will bring together board members from some of the largest asset owners (e.g.: ABP, ATP, CalSTRS, FRR, LUCRF Super) and trade union representatives from more than 15 countries.
Trustee Profile Series
The CWC published the second of a series of action profiles on how pension trustees from across the world deal with salient ESG issues at the board level.
Archer Capital
Archer Capital is an Australian private equity firm that holdsAeroCare, a provider of outsourced flight support services in Australia and New Zealand. AeroCare secured a non-union collective agreement that undermines the rights of AeroCare workers to freedom of association and collective bargaining, and fails to conform to Award Safety Net Minimum Standards for the Australian aviation industry.

The CWC, on behalf of ACTU and its affiliates, is kindly asking that union-nominated pension trustees raise at their Board the fund’s exposure to Archer Capital and, if there is exposure, request that investment managers engage with the company to discuss appropriate social governance standards.
Trustee Leadership Forum
On June 12th, José Meijer, ABP vice-chair and chair of the CWC trustee leadership group, along with Hugues Létourneau, senior program officer with the CWC, held a discussion with US trustees during the Trustee Leadership Forum about practical pathways to elevate the profile of workers' and human rights in the investment chain. The presentation was tied to the promotion of the CWC Guidelines for the Evaluation of Workers's Human Rights and Labour Standards.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM CWC PARTICIPANTS

Australia
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) provided CWC participants with an update on its work on the "ESG/Labour Standards Ratings Project", a labour standards code for infrastructure investments and the workers' capital stream of the NexGen Conference.
France
The Réseau d'Administrateurs pour l'Investissement Responsable (RAIR) and Proxinvest supported CtW Investment Group in asking the Autorité des marchés financiers [French Securities Commission] to examine irregularities in the governance structure of the Renault-Nissan alliance. On behalf of RAIR, Proxinvest and CtW, a French labour-nominated trustee raised corporate governance questions at the Renault AGM on June 15th, as well as questions regarding the company's efforts to deny workers at its Mississippi, USA plant the right to freedom of association.
The Netherlands
The FNV published a Roadmap for Trustees in Pension Funds Relating to Freedom of Association and the Right to Collective Bargaining. The document, written by
Thérèse Schets, aims to support boards of trustees of pension funds in assuming their responsibility to formulate and/or review and implement a responsible investment policy in which fundamental labour standards are embedded. This roadmap was developed in response to studies that indicate that little attention is devoted to the social component of the environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.
United States
The AFL-CIO urged US representatives to oppose the Financial Create Hope and Opportunity for Investors, Consumers and Entrepreneurs (CHOICE) Act of 2017 (H.R.10) as it would "result in significant harm to working people who depend on the integrity of financial markets and to our nation’s economy as a whole."
With over 200 members from 25 different countries, the Committee on Workers' Capital is an international labour union network for dialogue and action on the responsible investment of workers capital.
