Fiji's military government has dramatically stepped up its harassment of
trade unionists. Recently, FTUC President Daniel Urai was arrested for holding
an ‘illegal’ trade union meeting, and his trial is due to start on Friday, 2 September. The Fijian
regime has also recently issued a spate of decrees, the effect of which will be
to virtually wipe out independent public sector trade unions. PSI and its affiliated unions in Fiji urgently
request that trade unions write to the Fiji government now to urge the
government to stop these attacks and act to guarantee human rights and
democracy. Please

PSI is also asking affiliates to intervene with
their Foreign ministries and seek to get questions raised in their Parliaments
concerning the human rights and civil liberties situation in Fiji. For further
