Mauritania's ratification of an ILO Protocol on Forced Labour brings hope for the more than 300,000 people affected by slavery in the country.

2016 will be a crucial year for efforts to transform the global supply chain model which dominates international trade but is responsible for keeping workers in poverty, insecurity and in jobs that threaten their health and safety.

On October 5, 2015, the governments of Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam concluded negotiations for the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement.

A new study released by the ITUC shows that investment into the care economy of 2% of GDP in just 7 countries would create over 21 million jobs and help countries overcome the twin challenges of ageing populations and economic stagnation.

Deadline Extension ITUC Survey: Please make sure to respond to the questionnaire compiling information about violations of trade union rights by sending it to legal@ituc-csi.org. We hope to get as many responses as possible so that each country situation can be reflected accurately. The deadline was extended to 31 March 2016.

“Mauritanians living in slavery are under the total control of their masters, herding animals, working in the fields, and doing domestic work. Women and girls are often subjected to abuse and sexual assault. The government needs to finally break the cycle of servitude, which is passed on from mother to child.”
- Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary -
