http://psa.org.nz/YourWorkplace/LocalGovt/LGBlog.aspx Auckland Council has a vision to create “the world’s most liveable city.”For this to become a reality, people need a Living Wage.
In a great first step, Mayor Len Brown stated his support for the principle of the living wage when he met with 20 Living Wage community leaders in February. Rev. Fakaofo Kaio urged Len Brown to be a “voice for the voiceless” while a contracted cleaner at Auckland Council told his story of struggling to live on $13.85 when he must travel to the city every night for an ever decreasing number of hours of work. Lippy Chalmers from a small business, TONZU, said her company was committed to paying their staff a Living Wage over time. The company has seen the benefits of increasing wages in terms of increased productivity and engagement, little staff turnover and reduced absenteeism.
Mayor Len Brown has invited the campaign to work closely with Council on the Living Wage impact report.
