given up. The third ITUC congress calls for further union commitments on
climate change to limit increases in temperature to 2°C maximum.
Over the last few years, it seems that governments
around the world have opted for climate inaction. These have been wasted
years both for low carbon national economic policies, and for coming to
an international agreement on climate change at the United Nations
Convention which would ensure people's and our planet's safety.
The time for an orderly transition is inevitably running out, as
scientists and environmentalists have been tirelessly repeating. The
International Trade Union Confederation has not given up, and is now,
more than ever, ready to push governments around the world into reaching
an agreement on climate action and limit any increase in temperature to
a maximum of 2°C.
With this end in mind, the next Congress, which will be held in Berlin
from 18 to 23 May, the third in its history since the unification of the
two international exchanges, will include among many other initiatives
the launch of a manifesto and a campaign for climate action which will
call affiliated organizations to both redouble efforts to apply pressure
and also to make specific commitments.
This is clearly stated in the manifesto: “The
goal is to secure an ambitious global climate framework which will
protect working people's lives and jobs, ensure universal access to
breakthrough technologies and steer industrial transformation of all
economic sectors and industries and guarantee just transition measures
for everyone worldwide.”.
