One Hundred and Fifty Thousands,
Electricity/WAPDA Workers observed "PROTEST DAY" to-day 26th
August, 2015 under the aegis of ALL PAKISTAN WAPDA
HYDRO ELECTRIC WORKERS UNION C.B.A all over the country against the
Government Policies on the behest of I.M.F. and the World
Bank to hand over the investment worth the Trillions of Rupees of the National
Assets of the Electricity Distribution Companies to the Capitalists and its
complete control to the Private Members of the Board of Directors who have not invested even a Single Pie in these Companies
and have conflict of Interest as some of them are the major Industrialists and are appointed on Political Basis without Merit in
violation of the Law.
The Members of B.O.D of QUETTA ELECTRIC SUPPLY COMPANY Baluchistan (QESCO) had appointed a far Junior
Executive Engineer as the Chief Executive Office of the Quetta Electric Supply
Company Baluchistan of the largest Province of the Nation over the heads of its
General Managers and Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers due to favoritism and Nepotism in violation of
the Fundamental Right enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan under Article
25 which prohibit the Discrimination and Favoritism in the appointments of
employment in the Public Sector as well as they protested the Government
Policies on the behest of I.M.F. to privatize profitable Elecy. Companies
FAISALABAD ELECTRIC COMPANY (FESCO), LAHORE
ELECTRIC SUPPLY COMPANY (LESCO) and ISLAMABAD ELECTRIC SUPPLY COMPANY (IESCO) .
The held a Mass Rallies and took out
Procession at Quetta, Peshawar, Mardan, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Gujranwala,
Multan, Sukkur, Hyderabad and in other major cities in support of their
Demands. At Lahore Mass Procession was taken out from Bakhtiar Labour Hall,
Lahore under the aegis of the Union led by Veteran Trade Union Khurshid Ahmed
General.Secretary accompanied carrying
Pakistan Flags and Red Banners in support of their demands and held a mass
Rally before Lahore Press Club Square which was addressed by Trade Union Leaders Sajid Kazmi, Abdul Shakoor, Rana
Muhammad Akram, Osama Tariq, Hani Muhammad Younus and others and the representatives of Civil
Society including I.A. Rehman Secretary General Human Rights Commission of
Pakistan, Syed Tanzeem Hussain Naqvi Former Managing Director, Karachi Electric
Supply Corporation and Former Member (Power) WAPDA with a special
Message of Abid Hassan Minto expressing the support of the struggle of the
working class Former President Bar Association of Pakistan. I.A. Rehman
Secretary General of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan declared that its
State Obligations to provide basic need to the citizens in the public Sector
such as Electricity, Water, Education and Communication etc. Therefore, the Government should not privatize the profitable
Public Utilities of Electricity Companies in the public interest and hold
dialogue with the workers and its
CBA Union and place these Issues before the National Assembly .Syed Tanzaeem
Hussain Naqvi asked the Government of Pakistan to learn the bitter experience
and Lessons of the Privatization of Karachi Electric Company which had been getting 700 Megawatts Elec. Daily from WAPDA
at far cheaper rates and had not overcome load shedding and high cost of Elecy
' and had kept its Thermal Power Houses closed to earn double profits which fad
even been acknowledged by the Federal Government itself. Khurshid Ahmed
General Secretary of the Union declared that elecy is an engine of economic and
social and industrial and agriculture and development and basic need of all the
Citizens.
The past experience of Private Independent Thermal Power Houses had raised the cost of generation of Elecy. Rs,. 25 to 30 per unit and earning 60% cost of the capacity charges of their generation capacity without supply of elecy. in comparison with Tarbela and Mangla Hydel Power House which had been generating Elecy. @ Rs.2.5 per unit He pointed out that Karachi Electric Supply Company (KEC) had neither paying the cost of supply of Elecy. to WAPDA and cheaper rate of Gas to Southern Gas and huge amount of Karachi water Board costing more than one trillions of Rupees despite receiving billions of Rupees as subsidy from the Government every year. It had been explained before the Court by the Federal Government and declared by NEPRA itself, therefore the Government should not privatize profitable Elecy. Public Utilities which would also give rise Inter Provincial Dispute. He further added that the father of the Nation also declared that it is the national Public Utilities would be run in the Public Sector. He urged the Govt. to introduce the administrative Reform of Power Sector by taking over its control from Private Members of B.O.D and place under WAPDA or PEPCO for raising efficiency and urged the Prime Minister to hold dialogue with the union in case of failure, the workers would spare no sacrifice to make I.M.F. Plan failure and appealed to all the Political Parties to support the demands of the Union in the national interest.
